Pop quiz: If the St. Augustine Amphitheatre holds 4,800 people and each person orders one drink per show, how many single-use cups are served during an event?
Well, that’s easy - 4,800 cups.
Now, take 4,800 cups per show and multiple it by 68 events a year. How many cups is that?
Answer: 326,400 cups. And that’s approximately how many single-use plastic cups were served at the Amphitheatre during a season. It equated to a dumpsters full of cups being shipped off to a recycling facility. That is until 2019 when the St. Augustine Amphitheatre and its Green Hands Initiative collaborated with R.Cup to end the use single-use plastic cups at the venue. Together, they launched the world’s first reusable rental cup program at a music venue. The idea was simple - replace single-use plastic cups with a durable, reusable plastic cup that patrons rented for $3 and used throughout the evening. At the end of the event, patrons returned their cup and received their $3 deposit back. The cup is then washed, sanitized, air-dried and placed back into rotation. The program was a massive success and resulted in that dumpster full of cups being diverted from being recycled to being reused – a big win for sustainability! As the Amphitheatre entered its 2020 concert season, the reusable cup program was improved upon and continues to make gains in sustainability and achieve its overall goal of reducing waste and the ecological footprint of concert venues and live events – ensuring that only great memories linger after the show.
