June is one of my favorite months in the Treasure Valley, marking the start of summer – where I look forward to longer days and warmer weather. Along with many residents, I welcome the plethora of outdoor activities that we are so fortunate to have in our region.
I believe something that makes our area so special is the Boise River Greenbelt. With nearly 50 miles of pathway that meanders alongside the Boise River and links residents and guests alike to Boise’s Ribbon of Jewels parks. These parks are a destination in themselves, each with their own unique qualities, with names that honor the legacies of remarkable women who were some of Boise’s finest civic leaders.
In the summertime, biking the greenbelt becomes my main form of transportation. There is something relaxing about hopping on a bike and moving at a slower pace. It gives you time to smile at the stranger passing by, appreciate the public art along the way, and if you look closely enough, you’ll spot wildlife like beaver, mink, deer and the occasional skunk or bobcat. This year it’s especially exciting as my wife and I will be able to experience these bikes rides for the first time with our new son – opening up a fresh perspective into how he sees the world.
Summertime is also the peak travel season, where Boise fills up with curious visitors who are experiencing our city for the first time and local residents do the same traveling to new exciting destinations. The Boise Airport serves as the jumping off point for these trips and has continually announced air service to new nonstop destinations. The Boise Airport now has nonstop service to 27 destinations across the United States, and with Spirit Airlines and Avelo Airlines starting service in Boise this summer, there are now eight airlines to choose from.
The airport also continues to grow in pace with our community and is expanding its facilities. It is currently constructing new parking garages within easy walking distance of the terminal for passengers and employees. Additional construction is also planned for a new rental car garage and new concourse which will include six additional gates, with the ability to expand to 12 gates in the future.
Whatever your summer plans include, I encourage everyone to act a little bit like a tourist and experience something new. Stop in at a brewery you’ve never visited, explore one of Boise’s museums, or have a picnic at a park you don’t typically go to. Our region has endless amounts of exciting activities, I think you’ll be surprised what you can find in your own back yard.
