In a realm where entrepreneurship propels progress and potential, a standout luminary defies stereotypes, forging her own path to success. Allow us to introduce Monica Coleman, a Hampton University graduate and visionary Black woman entrepreneur reigning supreme as the proprietor of Stanley's Cigar Lounge. With unwavering determination and fiery passion, she not only reshapes the cigar industry but also sparks a fervor for Black women entrepreneurs to claim their space and thrive in an arena that has not always been welcoming.
Stanley's Cigar Lounge stands as a revolution, championing the importance of diversity and inclusivity in an industry traditionally dominated by men. As the fearless owner, manager, and experience curator, Monica has transformed her establishment into a haven that welcomes all cigar enthusiasts, irrespective of gender or race. Her audacious presence in this traditionally exclusive arena not only confronts stereotypes head-on but also inspires Black women to break free from societal constraints and embrace their dreams. What's most noteworthy about Monica is her camaraderie, as she refers to herself as a "girl’s girl." When asked about advice for other women, Monica emphasizes, “You deserve to have the seat you have and want. It’s okay to want to do well in your career and be a wife, friend, and mother. Be true to yourself. Everyone doesn’t have to be a boss. Figure out what makes you happy and stand in that.”
The cigar industry has long been steeped in tradition, with a perception that it caters primarily to a White, male clientele. However, Monica shatters these antiquated notions, solidifying herself as a force to be reckoned with. What's particularly impressive about Monica are her views on family and finding balance.
“Yes, I am an entrepreneur,” she says, “but I am also a mother, and I don’t miss those special moments. I prioritize my family over everything, and that will never change. No one would question a man regarding his decision—I will always do what is right for me.”
Monica's remarkable success as a Black woman entrepreneur extends far beyond personal triumph. It radiates through the empowerment of her community and the enrichment of South Fulton’s local economy. As the owner of Stanley's Cigar Lounge, she creates invaluable employment opportunities, enabling others to flourish and contribute to the region's growth. Her entrepreneurial prowess showcases the transformative power of investing in Black women, uplifting communities, and fostering economic prosperity for all.
The presence of trailblazers like Monica in the cigar industry kindles a flame of inspiration for everyone, menand women alike. Her indomitable spirit serves as a guiding light, encouraging young Black girls to dream fearlessly and pursue their entrepreneurial ambitions relentlessly. We can’t wait to continue watching Monica; her star is undoubtedly destined to shine even brighter.
Stanley’s is owned by Monica G. Coleman, one of very few Black female sole proprietors in the cigar and tobacco industry, and is named in honor of her late grandfather, Stanley Franklin, the first entrepreneur in her family.
