February is Love My Library Month, and what better time to unravel the layers of the Dakota County Public Library, where the love for books meets the heartbeat of the community? I recently sat down with Margaret Stone, the Library Director, who shared her passion for making the library not just a hub of information but a lively, welcoming space for everyone.
Margaret Stone is on a mission—to help people rediscover the joy of the library. "It's a fun place," she emphasized, acknowledging that while many love the idea of a library, not everyone understands its full spectrum of services. Beyond the traditional books, the library unfolds a world of possibilities.
Your Library Offers More Than Traditional Books
With so many things going digital, the library now goes the extra mile. Thanks to Libby by Overdrive, you can reserve up to 15 eBooks, audiobooks, and e-magazines online. Whether you are a bookworm or a tech enthusiast, the library adapts to your preferences, offering a versatile range of resources.
The library stands as a bridge for those with limited internet access. With desktop computers on-site and Chromebooks that can be borrowed in a kit with a WIFI hotspot, the library makes connecting online easier.
The library isn't just for silent reading or solitary work. The library offers comfortable seating and free-to-reserve quiet workspaces for remote workers seeking a change of scenery. Parents can bring their little ones for storytime and extend their visit for a playdate—a testament to the library's commitment to being a communal space.
Your Local Library Embraces a Love for Learning
Classes and events for all age groups are the library's forte. There's something for everyone, from basic macramé knots to acrylic painting, book bingo, history discussions, and so much more. Margaret highlighted, "It's all about providing access to information and learning at no cost."
And did you know your library sits at the heart of innovation? The library's iLab offers a unique maker space. Here, community members can experiment with 3D printing, slide or VHS conversion, green screen and video editing, creating music in an audio booth with access to music editing software, or get creative with fabric cutters, paper cutters, and sewing machines—an embodiment of the library's commitment to lifelong learning.
As Margaret expressed, "We're a community-focused library." The Dakota County Library isn't just a repository of books; it's a reflection of the community's needs. In response to the growing sense of isolation with people spending more time at home even after the pandemic, the library has become a meeting ground where people connect, share, and simply enjoy being in each other's company.
Your Library is Connected Online and in the Community
Obtaining a library card is now a breeze; it is available online for those who prefer a virtual connection. Removing fines for late return of children's books has eliminated stigma, making the library even more accessible. The library's outreach program, delivering books to less mobile senior citizens, speaks volumes about its dedication to inclusivity.
Part of the Metropolitan Library Service Agency (MELSA), the Dakota County Library is an integral part of a consortium that circulated over 9,000,000 eBooks in 2022. With nine libraries and the tenth opening in South St. Paul in February 2024, the library is expanding its embrace.
In the spirit of Love My Library Month, let's heed the tagline: "Explore the opportunities.” Because the truth is, there's more to the public library than you might think. The Dakota County Public Library is not just a place—it's a vibrant community hub, a source of support, and a boundless reservoir of knowledge waiting to be explored. So, this February, let's celebrate the love for our libraries and discover the treasures within.
