Gratitude. When thinking about the month of November, you may be thankful for a warm house or
mashed potatoes. Taking care of yourself and your family financially may not immediately come to mind—yet doing so is a huge gift to your family and something to be grateful for.
“Most of what we do centers around gratitude—using the gifts you’ve been given to provide for yourself and your family,” said Barbara Larson, co-owner of Larson Wealth Planners. “It all starts with having a plan for your goals. What do you want to accomplish? How do you make that plan reflect how you feel about your money?”
Barbara and her team, which includes her daughter, Brittany, and her daughter-in-law, Hope, work with their clients to create financial strategies based on what’s important to the clients. That could mean giving money to one’s children or donating money to charities. And of course, ensuring that the client themselves is taken care of.
“We help our clients plan. We seek to understand what matters most to our clients, and then we put the plan together,” said Barbara. “During our conversations, we see that many times, people aren’t aware of the possibilities. Gifting comes from the heart, yet if you’re stuck in your head, you won’t see the heart. We help our clients see the head and the heart possibilities.”
Many factors come into play with financial decisions, so establishing relationships with clients—knowing the person and their motivations—is very important to the team at Larson Wealth Planners. For example, one young client always seemed very concerned about the cost of things. “It was through talking with him that we learned that he grew up with very little in a small home with his siblings and extended family, so it made sense that he would be cautious about money. We used that caution in his financial plan,” said Barbara.
Another client had a substantial nest egg. Her kids were struggling, and she wanted a plan to give to her kids and grandkids while she was still alive. Giving during her life was more important to her than continuing to build a big nest egg for her kids to have after she was gone. “Understanding her
motivations helped us build that plan for her children and grandchildren,” said Brittany.
Barbara adds that many people don’t realize that the best gift they can give to their children is to take care of themselves first. “When people don’t plan, for long-term healthcare needs, it puts an undue burden on the family. Taking care of your long-term needs—and having conversations with your family about it—is truly a gift,” Barbara shared. And that’s something to be grateful for.
