Timothy Wayne, rising country artist—and Tim McGraw’s nephew— opens up about his new single and chasing music down every avenue of Franklin.
Tell me a bit about your newest single, “That’d Be You.”
Growing up I was a weird kid playing guitar in the stairwell. One day, a beautiful girl saw me and asked for my number. Not long after that, I left and came here. I called my buddy Mark Collie and said, ‘I've got a melody in my head, but I need help with lyrics.’ He connected me with Jamie Moore, and the three of us wrote "That’d Be You." It started as up-tempo but ended up somewhere between that and a ballad. When we laid the demo, we knew it was special. It's been doing pretty good so far.
What is your writing process like?
I pace around a lot. I'm good with melodies, so I play guitar, record ideas, and save them for sessions. I'm okay with the lyrics, but I’m still working on that. I usually pitch a melody, and when we land on something. I walk the room strumming the same chords till lyrics click. Then we shape it together.
What's it like living and working in music around Franklin and Nashville?
It's amazing. Music's everywhere. From Broadway to street performers in downtown Franklin, it's super inspiring. Now that I'm working in Nashville, I really feel what everyone is chasing.
