Heroes Wear Running Shoes

Changing lives through "miles"

Being a parent can be stressful, to say the least.   For Katie Warner Mitchell and her son Connor, handling stress like true champions has become a way of life.  I had the honor of sitting down with Katie to discuss how she has taken the opportunity to “turn pain into change”.

Connor (6yrs old) was born with a condition called Front Metaphyseal Dysplasia (FMD), a genetic disorder characterized by abnormalities in skeletal development and issues with other organs of the body.  In essence, Connors daily tasks can be very difficult and extremely painful due to very sore bones.

However, this pain does NOT slow Connor down.  Even though he wears hearing aids, Connor loves music, especially Morgan Wallen.  Kaitie says her son can “feel the music”, and it brings a huge smile to his face. In addition to music, Connor also loves anything with some serious horsepower, from cars, to tractors, to jets - he is all about power and speed!

Since birth, Katie and Connor are no strangers to the miracle workers at Boston Childrens Hospital.  They have been there from minor injuries to possible life-threatening issues, including their most recent 14 day stay this past August that put Connor into the ICU.  With all the trips to BCH, insurance alone cannot cover it all. In true Katie/Connor fashion, they are rising to the occasion.  On April 15th, Katie will be running in the “Miles for Miracles Foundation” race.  Katie was one of the 160 selected out of thousands of applicants to run to raise money for the “Every Child Fund”.  This fund helps BCH assist families with all “non-insurance” expenses.   By running, Katie hopes to instill in Connor that “if something is hard, but you want to do it, YOU CAN.”
