Interior Design Trends for 2022

We spoke with five local designers for their take on what's hot and what's not this year

The pandemic has forced us to reevaluate what's important and we've been spending a lot of time inside; so, what's next? Right now, it’s all about comfort, coziness, and warmth. We’re encouraging clients to embrace chocolate browns and caramel colors for their interiors. Warmer colors are welcoming and push-back on the over-saturation of gray tones that have been a standard in interiors in recent years. Drenched-in-nature colors help us feel “grounded” and the darker and moodier, the better! All white interiors and the decades-long farmhouse trend are due for an update. Another shift we’re seeing is rounded, soft, silhouettes and furniture that imbue the comfort and relaxation we so desperately need in our homes.

One of the biggest glass trends in recent years is the frameless shower door. Chic and elegant, frameless or semi-frameless shower doors, as the names imply, eliminate vinyl or aluminum frames typically included on older-style glass doors. Instead frameless or a semi-frameless glass doors are held in place with sleek metal clips. Replacing an older shower door with a frameless or semi-frameless ones can make a big statement in a bathroom. The clear glass lets in more light and it makes a bathroom brighter and appear bigger. Newer semi-frameless doors include ones that roll on an upper track in the popular barn-door style.

The trend of white kitchens isn’t leaving any time soon! White with natural wood or grey-blue painted accents still dominate kitchen designs, though we’re starting to see an increase in warmer tones: softer greys, whites and taupes, which will compliment warm metals, such as gold, bronze and brass. Simplifying and streamlining kitchen and bathroom design is also a very popular request. The days of fancy mosaics, architectural details and difficult upkeep have been replaced with clean lines, pattern simplicity and maintenance-free materials. Clients are choosing matching countertop and backsplashes, eliminating tile and grout all together from their projects.  Also popular are showers with full slabs of porcelain instead of tile and grout.

As a window treatment specialist I’m always on the lookout for the latest trend in colors, fabrics, and window treatments. While some trends are made to last, others quickly disappear. One trend that has staying power is the shift toward outdoor living and the need for awnings and outdoor shades. Indoors, we will continue to see drapery panels and roman shades, but in a more artful way.  Look for the power of bold, beautiful and large scale patterns and classic prints in fresh, new color ways. Details that don’t overpower - like tassels and scalloped trims - will also gain popularity as 2022 celebrates traditional designs that stand the test of time!

Gray and shiplap have run their course. Periwinkle and sage are the 2022 “Colors of The Year.” Periwinkle accents are a quick way to update gray interiors. Cream is the “new” neutral.  Kitchen renovations are popular and include the latest appliances, smart features, dual islands, and colorful ranges. There’s  a wide selection of gorgeous tiles available and backsplashes are becoming more adventurous. Master bathroom renovations, incorporating calming features and a bit of luxury, are in the works. Spending so much time at home definitely caused people to rethink the future. Removing tubs in favor of large curbless showers is a top request. Luxury upgrades include towel warming drawers, heated floors, and motorized shades.
