Anybody who has participated in musical theater knows how powerful and gratifying it can feel to express yourself. Now imagine if those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDS), were afforded the same opportunity in a space that felt encouraging, supportive, and safe. Thanks to Dream Catchers, a local non-profit organization, this ‘dream’ has become a reality.
CEO Jonathan Reis came up with the idea of a theater program for persons with disabilities as his senior project while studying at college. After school, he built upon his experience in Recreation Therapy and classical theater. Therefore, it was a natural progression to form Dream Catchers. Though the theater program is at the heart of the organization, Dream Catchers is more than just performing arts. The Independence Day Program is geared toward helping IDDS individuals develop skills for future employment and/or living on their own; assists them in learning independence skills while fostering an environment where they can form positive social connections. “Our program is filled with such magic and love," says Jonathan. "We welcome you to come and let us share our dream with you.”
Jonathan also has his sights set on ‘the Dream Home.’ This would be a space for IDDS individuals to live semi-independently. Here he envisions a safe haven for individuals to work, build connections, and thrive. The success of Dream Catchers has also called for a larger facility in the Business Park. Boasting over 5,000 square feet, it will include a kitchen for cooking classes, a game room, and a stage for their beloved productions. They will also have classrooms for reading, speech, arts and crafts, and music.
