Lower Your Carbon Footprint

How your Local Lifestyle Can Have a Positive Global Impact

“Going Green” does not have to mean giving up a fun and active lifestyle. St. Augustine is a beautiful city with a rich variety of things to do; if you can reduce your carbon footprint while doing what you enjoy, it’s a win-win.

When is the last time you got your bicycle out of the garage? Seeing the city from a bike is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. Anastasia Island has some great bike trails where you can create new memories with friends and family as you visit areas you may have missed driving around.

Don’t have your own bike? Rent one from St. Augustine Bike Rentals, Island Life Shop, or Solano Cycle.

There are ways to reduce your carbon footprint beyond leaving your car at home. Consider things like your family’s energy use, consumable items like household products, food and clothing. Where can you make some simple improvements?

1. Drive your car less. If you have to commute for work, plan some errands to run after so you can stay in on the weekend and relax at home.

2. Purchase vintage clothing and accessories. Visit one St. Augustine’s thrift shops like Fifi’s Fine Resale Apparel or Christe Blue to update your wardrobe.

3. Make intentional purchases. Buy items with simpler packaging (or no packaging) and bring home less waste. Many families use the one in-one out rule when purchasing household items.

4. Use your garden to create a natural oasis. St. Johns Seed Library provides packets of seeds each month at no cost to its members. Join at your local library branch.

5. Know your family’s estimated carbon footprint and make the best choices for your family. Visit www.nature.org/greenliving/carboncalculator for more information.

Plan a Fun Family Event

Challenge your family to reduce what they purchase, use and toss. Make it a game to see which family member can plan a fun family event with materials on hand. It’s amazing what you can find leftover in your hall closet.

Prioritize What Your Family Loves

If your family loves movie night, save the money (and accumulated trash) from a regular Friday night at the movies and plan a night at home. Stream a new release and pop some bulk popcorn instead of using individual bags; each family member can add their favorite seasonings.

Enjoy New Experiences Together

Florida is great for trying new outdoor projects. Whether you end up building a tree house with reclaimed lumber or adding to your existing garden in the backyard, your family is bound to make some amazing memories.
