Dream House Interior Designers Andie Dennis, Wendy Flynn, Cassandra Senn Vaira and Mary Beutler share their most valuable interior design tips:
Invest in your “every day” pieces.
You don’t want to skimp on the important pieces. Investing in seating, especially in the family room, is going to save you in the long run. There are other areas where you can save, like lamps, side tables or accessories. You won’t regret a sofa that lasts for decades; you will regret having to replace your focal-point sofa after a few years.
Choose cleanable fabrics for all upholstered furniture.
Sunbrella, Crypton and Inside Out are a few of the cleanable fabric resources out there. They’re not only cleanable but they are durable, kid/pet friendly and some are fade resistant. When investing in upholstery, we always recommend pairing your lasting furniture with lasting fabrics.
Pick a key piece to design everything else around.
You’ve got to start somewhere. When starting from scratch find a rug, a piece of art, etc. (in this case, a piano) to start the design around. You will be able to bounce any ideas or pieces off that starting point to make sure it aligns with the design direction.
Find a Designer who listens to and understands YOUR style.
If you end up hiring an Interior Designer, make sure they can execute a range of design styles. That way you are guaranteed to get a space you love without having to compromise.
