HEARTH & HOME, JAMES CASTLE HOUSE EXHIBITION

James Castle (1899-1977) chronicled his life in Idaho with thousands of soot-and-spit drawings, creating works using a unique technique of scraping carbon from his family's woodstove and mixing it with his saliva. Castle's monochromatic artworks range from realistic renderings of his home and daily views to abstract and invented imagery, offering a glimpse into the artist's talent and imagination. The exhibition, Hearth & Home, on view exclusively at the James Castle House in Boise, Idaho through July 29, features nearly 30 original artworks from the City of Boise's collection, donated by the James Castle Collection and Archive, including a never-before displayed artwork donated by James W. Gilles in 2021. The exhibition can be viewed during open hours Thursday through Saturday, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. or through a digital exhibition companion. What is the Boise Flower and Garden Show?

A TRANSITIONAL YEAR FOR THE MARKET

The housing market in Ada County, Idaho faced challenges and opportunities in 2022. The pandemic led to a peak in demand for housing, with too many buyers chasing too few homes, resulting in bidding wars and a highly competitive market. However, the Federal Reserve's efforts to reset the market and slow price appreciation made 2022 a transitional year. Mortgage rates increased due to Federal Reserve rate hikes in the second half of 2022, leading to a decrease in demand for housing, resulting in lower home sales and downward pressure on home prices. Ada County ended the year with 20.8% fewer total sales than in 2021. The higher mortgage interest rates and swift home price appreciation impacted buyers' purchasing power, some made budget adjustments, and others put their home search on hold.
