A little less stressful and a lot more fun. This is how Megan Daughtry describes her approach to helping clients realize their ideal homes through her Boulder-based company, Proud House Studios.
“My goal with founding Proud House was to create a design studio for my clients that would inspire their imaginations,” says Megan, CEO and principal designer. “I love working with my clients to co-create the homes of their dreams.”
This spirit of collaboration and thoughtful, personalized design is especially evident in a recent project that the Proud House team embarked on. The client was undertaking a major remodel of their three-bedroom, three-bathroom home that included finishing the basement and adding an underground bedroom with a dining room addition above it, updating the deck to wrap around the house and updating its original finishes. The homeowners worked with the Proud House team to visualize and execute a new interior design for the home that would encompass both large-scale rearrangements and specific design details.
“Each space in this home was co-created with my clients,” says Megan. “We worked together to carefully curate the vision down to every detail.”
The goals for the home’s interior design were twofold. First, to maximize every inch of available space to accommodate the everyday needs of the homeowners and their family. Second, to invoke a crisp, luminous style harkening back to the homeowners’ roots.
“My client is from Sweden and desired a bright Nordic home with all gray, white and light wood materials,” says Megan.
To achieve these dual goals, the Proud House team considered both large-scale and minute elements throughout the home to ensure that its space was optimized and that the homeowners would be enveloped in a peaceful, glowing palette. For the home’s exterior, the original brick was replaced with stucco to soften the exterior color. New windows with gray cross-shaped mullions add to the exterior curb appeal and evoke a more European home design. The wraparound covered porch was refreshed to include gray-stained tongue and groove paneling on the ceiling as well as a new railing, heaters, speakers and outdoor kitchen with a Caesarstone outdoor-rated quartz countertop. The concrete driveway was replaced with pavers and walkways, adding textures reminiscent of European mountain towns.
“I was inspired by the cool grays and whites found in the icy Swedish landscape,” says Megan. “I then repeated those exterior colors inside the home.”
On the main floor, the kitchen was moved toward the new dining room to facilitate a new mudroom space—complete with custom cabinetry—and allow for the kitchen to look out toward the home’s lush backyard and adjacent park space. This all-white kitchen was built with Siteline Cabinetry with Pental Misterio white countertops with subtle gray veining. The stained white oak wide plank flooring—Provenza brand and in a light gray Chelsea Pier—adds a warm, soothing aura to the space.
Peak functionality and style are likewise blended in the newly finished basement. The space is cleverly divided into seven functional spaces, including a new bedroom, the bathroom, a multipurpose office or guest room with a Murphy bed, a kitchenette, a laundry room, a sleepover zone with custom bunk beds and a media and game lounge.
Elsewhere in the home, the bathrooms exude a crisp, immaculate elegance. While one incorporates lovely Nimbus blue cabinets from Siteline Cabinetry and Enigma Ash Blue shower tiles from the Tile Bar, the primary bathroom glows with Ann Sacks Savoy shower tile and Siberian Pearl brushed marble floors in a herringbone pattern.
Additional special design elements are peppered throughout the home, including a new fireplace surround, bike barn and versatile custom garage cabinetry. Boulder’s Elton R Construction served as the home’s builder. The end result is a home that emanates both the taste and the lifestyle of the homeowners—all achieved through abundant care and collaboration.
“This home has such a cohesive look,” says Megan. “It feels soft and peaceful. We poured so much love into all its details.”
