People who are older than 55 years routinely contact physical therapists at St. Louis-headquartered HouseFit, searching for answers about how to best stay active and independent as they age, says the company's founder/owner Dr. Beth Templin, PT, DPT, GCS.
As a geriatric physical therapist, Dr. Templin says she and her therapists focus entirely on helping older adults move and feel better. "Most people's No. 1 complaint of aging is walking and difficulty with stairs. We guide our clients through customized plans to help them continue living as safely and productively as possible in their homes," she adds.
After working in geriatrics for 13 years, Dr. Templin opened her practice in 2017 as a mobile physical therapy clinic. She recalls quickly realizing there was a need for better ways to serve the local aging community. "I kept noticing people didn't have the services they needed to stay active and independent, to enjoy their retirements, and to age in place within their residences," she says, so she expanded the practice in 2018 to add the current gym space at 3809 Lemay Ferry Road.
HouseFit team members offer beneficial advice and physical support about issues such as maintaining overall balance, curbing arthritis pain and dealing with vertigo. Additionally, they provide specialty Parkinson's treatments and workshops about preparing for falls.
She says many people think of physical therapy for after surgery, knee replacements or illness, and they don't realize that her team can focus proactively on prevention and wellness, in essence slowing down the effects of typical aging.
"My job is my happy place. Every single day, clients pull me aside and share what positive impacts our services have had on their lives, their loved ones, on their ability to travel and get back to doing the things they love to do. It just makes my heart so happy," assures Dr. Templin.
