Creative ways to stay active with COVID restrictions is the new normal at Jacaranda Trace Retirement Community in Venice. Each week the Activities Department comes up with fresh ideas to keep residents from worrying about what is going on outside their protective community environment. Not only is the pool and exercise room open but, between live exercise classes, brain games, courses in exotic travel, and virtual bingo, a resident’s day can be filled to the brim with their activity and amenity favorites.
"We celebrated every holiday virtually," said Diana Verhulst, Activities Director. She explained that they made virtual Valentine Hearts, Easter Decorations, and a Fourth of July Barbeque, complete with all the fixings and delivered door to door.
Food at Jacaranda Trace
"We never miss a day of elegant meals during COVID," said Cheryl Talman, Director of Dining at Jacaranda Trace. Residents chose from a large menu for lunch and dinner and had it delivered to their apartment." There was Valentine's Day in August with surf and turf, a Resident Appreciation night with lobster dinners, and Asian night with take-out boxes, she said.
A Broad Program of COVID Protections
Though the Dining Room is now open, along with The Grill for lunch, distanced seating restrictions are in place. Security is tight at Jacaranda Trace and no one can enter the building without having their temperature taken. Visitors are questioned on their recent activities and employees are COVID tested. The exercise room is cleaned twice daily, as well as the hallways, staircases, and the mailroom. Transportation to doctor's appointments, local food shopping, and attorney and financial establishments is provided.
Jacaranda Trace offers 24-hour access to an on-site medically trained staff. If you have a health care setback or just need to see a health care professional you have total control of who you choose to use. On campus professionals include doctors, therapists, home care nurses, and CNAs. Our community nurse is happy to take blood pressure or help with health issues. If you have a personal emergency anywhere on campus, residents are provided with the Lifeline System pendants. This allows emergency technicians to come to your aid anywhere on the campus including your residence. Caregivers are maintained at a higher 3 to 1 staff-to-resident ratio. Health care is available 24 hours a day and a registered nurse is on duty weekdays and on call 24/7.
Sue Punzal, Jacaranda Trace resident, summed it up by saying, "I feel very safe within these walls, it's like a protective fortress, especially with hurricane season coming along.” Her husband Romy added, "We are very glad we moved here!"
