First, let’s start with the basics – what is color analysis and why is it important?
Color analysis is a system of determining a person's best colors to wear based on their hair, skin and eyes. Everyone has colors they look best and not-so-great in and it has to do with contrast as well as other factors. While, yes, ‘everyone can wear any color,’ having your colors done means knowing the ones that best suit your individual characteristics. For example, a blonde with blue eyes and fair skin looks stunning in pale pink or light greens whereas a brown-eyed brunette with tan skin would look better in deeper jewel tones. Warm versus cool undertones are also a factor.
Benefits include a boost in confidence, being able to clear out the closet of colors that don't work, shopping within a limited color palette, an easier time getting dressed, and saving a lot of time and money! Many of my clients build a capsule wardrobe which simplifies their life and helps them enjoy getting dressed again.
Tell us more about warm versus cool.
Here’s the great news: most people I analyze are neutral and can wear a spectrum of colors and any jewelry finish. Rose gold jewelry is particularly flattering on most people, and if in doubt, wear a mix of gold and silver. With jewelry and makeup, the trick is that if you’re wearing warmer colors, wear gold jewelry and warm makeup. If you’re wearing cooler colors, wear silver jewelry and cool makeup.
What is the most surprising thing people discover when they find their best colors?
For most people, black and white drains life out of your face. Most people look more alive and youthful in colors. Not only is navy blue more flattering than black on a lot of people, but it’s also less boring and expected.
The other thing people are surprised by is that every person can wear every color—it just depends on which shade or intensity. It’s all about what flatters your features and what you feel confident in.
What can we do to make our natural beauty shine using color?
My best tip is to match the top half of your outfit to your eyes, in both color and intensity. Most people look fantastic wearing the same color as their eye color. It creates balance, and makes you look more trustworthy. Also match the color intensity to your eyes. Women with neutral, dark brown eyes look terrific in dark colors like teal, plum and forest green. Gals with blue-green or hazel eyes can usually pull off colors of medium intensity and muted or heathered colors. If your eyes are bright green or blue, bright, true colors are the way to go.
One last question: what is your best advice for our readers?
I preach it all the time: wear more color. Whether you’re a mom in yoga pants and t-shirts at home, or you’re retired and playing pickleball at the club, the colors you wear really affect your mood and how people perceive you. Regardless of your size or your age, the right colors can make you look more put-together. Once you find your favorites, you’ll probably start playing more with makeup, jewelry and accessories, too. As your style confidence grows, your whole life gets a boost!
