SCAD FASH presents Cristóbal Balenciaga: Master of Tailoring, on view now through June 2. Curated exclusively for SCAD FASH, the exhibition will delight lovers of fashion history, presenting precious Balenciaga archival pieces from the late 1940s to 1968—the golden age of the house with the couturier at the helm.
Organized in collaboration with the Fondation Azzedine Alaïa, the exhibition features exquisitely preserved Balenciaga looks from the late designer Azzedine Alaïa’s archive of over 500 Balenciaga pieces. Presented in tandem are illustrations and photographs from the Balenciaga Archives and one-of-a-kind sketches and atelier communications. Revered by his contemporaries Christian Dior, Coco Chanel, and Hubert de Givenchy, Balenciaga was one of the only couturiers of his era with the expert ability to pattern, cut, and tailor his designs. A fashion innovator, Balenciaga introduced silhouettes that were groundbreaking for the time — including the iconic square coat and sack dress. Elegant garments on view include an exquisite gold sari gown worn by Elizabeth Taylor.
“Royalty comes to Atlanta as the ‘King of Fashion’ holds court at SCAD FASH, the crown jewel of couture higher education,” says SCAD President and Founder Paula Wallace. Expertly curated exclusively for SCAD from the famed personal collection of Azzedine Alaïa, Cristóbal Balenciaga: Master of Tailoring showcases the most innovative, imaginative, and impeccable design minds of the 20th century. From day wear to evening wear, Balenciaga’s broad shoulders dropped waistline, and impeccable fabrics will forever define elegance.
